What to Do?
The Elbe Sandstone Mountains Malerweg trail in Saxon Switzerland is one of the most picturesque hiking trails in Germany. Where once painters sought inspiration for their timeless works, you can now walk along a 112 km hiking trail through Saxon Switzerland.
Just before Pirna, the Malerweg meets the Canalettoweg trail. This round walk runs through the upper half of Pirna’s Old Town and below the former Sonnenstein Fortress, between the tall, old trees. The Venetian Bernardo Belotto, better known as Canaletto, painted Pirna in 1752 for the Dresden court.
Dresden is a city of Baroque wonders that have been resurrected since the war. North of the Frauenkirche is a regal 500-metre panoramic terrace, looking out on the Elbe from the left bank between the Augustusbrücke and the Carolabrücke. The terrace connects with the cathedral via a ceremonious stairway, and goes back to the time of Dresden’s fortifications.
Dresden Zwinger ranks among Germany’s most well-known Baroque buildings of Germany and is, apart from the Church of Our Lady, certainly the most famous building monument in Dresden. It accommodates internationally renowned museums and is a place for staging music and theater performances.
